Lipstick is a very personal thing – some prefer dark, others light, some natural, neutral or nude, others bright, some pink, others red, and others blue. It’s all in your preferences! If you have a lipstick that you want to use make sure you bring it to your makeup trial. Let your makeup artist know what you want – they are not mind readers and if you are not happy with the trial you won’t be happy on the day, so make sure to speak up!
In my case I always recommend that my brides go and buy their own lipstick for their wedding so that they have chosen the colour they want (which often gives me a better idea of the look they’re going for too) and they can then have it on hand on the day to touch up their lips as often as they want too.
Remember, especially for weddings, that you will be kissing a lot of people (family & friends, not just your new spouse!) and no one wants sticky colour on their face, so look for lipstick that is non-transferable and that lasts as long as possible. If you are not sure ask your makeup artist or the shop attendant/s for advice. You will find that matte lipsticks last the longest, but can sometimes look very dry on your lips so try to use a lip balm as much as you can before your big day. Some lipsticks come with or can have a gloss worn over the top of them.
Current brands on the market that I recommend include:
- Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks - I can vouch for this one staying for 6-7 hours, kiss-proof, and has a matte finish, but it can feel a little dry (as matte tends to do). It feels beautifully smooth going on and has rich colour.
- MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lipcolour - beautiful colours that definitely last around the 12 hours advertised and comes with its own gloss that doesn't make the colour come off and helps with the dryness of the matte finish. **Currently discontinued**
- Hourglass’s Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipsticks - said to last 14 hours but I have yet to try this one on myself, also matte finish.
- Rimmel’s Provocalips 16hr Kiss Proof Lip Colour - said to last 16 hours, doesn’t cost the earth, matte finish, comes with a glossy topcoat and I’m told this one doesn’t come off without baby oil!
Last tip – make sure you’ve brushed your teeth before putting the lippy on!
